  • RSS Awareness Day

Well I suppose now that its just about 5pm EST I should have gotten this post out a little earlier. However the fact that I forgot still does not change the simple fact that today is RSS Awareness Day.

I can say that without RSS I would be a lot less productive as it lets me scan hundreds of posts and websites in minutes looking for just the good stuff that helps me get the job done. Personally as a multi-computer user I prefer (and use) Google Reader, but there are a variety of great RSS clients out there. Some good options for PC’s and Mac’s alike as well as online readers such as Bloglines and the previously mentioned Google Reader.

For anyone in your life, I am sure you have at least more than a few, that are RSS ignorant here is a great video called “RSS In Plain English” courtesy of commoncraft.

Here are a few links to check out for RSS; rssday.org, rssday.info and of course we cannot forget Wikipedia, who defines RSS as:

“RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts.[2] An RSS document (which is called a “feed” or “web feed”[3] or “channel”) contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays.”

  • Facebook with real people

While I have a Facebook account, I have never really used it. I admit it does have some advantages and is something I should be more active with, but my fear is just like with Friendster and MySpace that eventually my friends will get tired of the service and I will have, or at least feel obligated to follow. Meaning I will have to take time to re-create yet another online profile and then find all my friends yet again. Anyway I guess aside from passing on this great video I found over on All Facebook, this is really just a ploy to be able to link to my Facebook profile in a shameful attempt at getting more friends.

That aside the video is actually pretty damn funny.

  • A successful Tampa Bloggers Dinner

Well, successful by my standards at least, hopefully others felt the same way. Of course with being married and having two young kids its not often that I get to venture out, especially without the company of young children and after dark. So not only being around other web geeks, but in a grown up setting works well for me.

The meetup was setup by Jeremiah Owyang, who works as a Sr Analyst at Forrester Research in Social Computing and lives no where near the Tampa area. It’s funny how it took someone from out of town to kick us into gear. It was great that Jeremiah thought of doing this and it was really nice to meet others bloggers and web-oriented folks in the area, even though we seem to be spread out in some cases up to 45 minutes away from Downtown Tampa.

We met informally at Cheap in Soho and quickly found lots to talk about. Hopefully now that the ball has began to roll, we (as Tampa bloggers) can keep it moving. Josh, who was at the meetup went ahead and registered a domain for the area, TampaBloggers.com. Hopefully he will develop it into something cool and help us all stay connected and at the same time keep us all in the loop for future meetups.

Hey, when is that next one scheduled for?
