  • I usually don’t see that much spam, many thanks to Gmail for the help with that. So the little bit that still gets to me are usually quickly deleted, but this one caught my eye.

You would think they would have at least checked to make sure the title was still appropriate.

  • My daughters Mac setup.

The question for me of late has been: How young should kids be given access to the internet?

For me I would imagine that a lot of people would consider the options of whether or not the computer has “parental controls” or web blocking software as opposed to just an open computer similar to how an adult would be set up. For me I prefer and also have my daughter set up with a regular Mac mini, without any special software or parental controls.

A little background here…and yes I am aware that there is stuff kids should not see online. My daughter is 5 years old and will be 6 in June, currently in Kindergarten and LOVES to use a computer. She has a Mac mini with a nice display, Apple Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse. She also surfs using Firefox with her homepage set as Google and her own collection of bookmarks. She also uses (plays with) iCal, Text Edit and Tux Paint on a regular basis.

She is able to use Google to search for websites and things she wants to find and knows how to bookmark additional sites, we also let her come and go as she wants, limiting the computer time only when it gets late, but that goes not only for the computer but all toys in general. Basically speaking she has just as much access and her mother and myself. She has even figured out how to make notes of things advertised on TV and then either types in the name of the site or searches for things about the item such as the phone number given.

So here is the question: Am I right or wrong?

  • A new collection: USB Thumb Drives

I had a nice 1GB SanDisk Cruzer that was a few years old now and always worked fine, but just in case that one breaks or gets lost I now have many more to choose from. These came from CES and contained Press Kits, they are actually pretty cool and range in size from a small 64MB to 1GB in size.

My preferred and new daily use drive will be the 512MB SanDisk Cruzer. While 512MB sounds small these days, it is actually more than enough for me as I rarely keep more than 100-200MB of junk on it.

My favorite is the Skype one, only because its so small and would make the perfect keychain model, except for the fact I have no key chain to put it on. (yes I have a car, but its a VW with only 1 key). No to mention its only 128MB, which even for me is small.

Wow, a nice boring story about my USB flash drives. :)

  • Now that we can customize the home screen on our iPhone’s (without being jailbroken) I thought I would share my current layout.

I am loving version 1.1.3 for the iPhone, while its nothing revolutionary as far as new features, I am really happy about being able to re-arrange my icons. I have moved a few off the main screen that I never use and even added a few web links. Now if Apple would just let me delete those icons that I never use, such as Stocks.
