  • Florida lightning sucks…

Yesterday I woke up grabbed my morning cup of coffee and went off to the computer to do a quick email and RSS check. I was happy to see that my new iMac was shipping and it was expected to arrive on Friday. I thought it was perfect timing, I do not have to work on Friday and could spend a good part of the day transferring the 150GB of data from my current Mac mini and clean that off and list it for sale before the weekend was out.

See, although I had the money for the new iMac I was hoping to cover at least some of the cost for the iMac by selling the mini. No luck, about 3:20 yesterday afternoon a very big and very close bolt of lightning hit close enough to my house to effectively kill that mini, a telephone, my EyeTV and somehow screw up my Apple Bluetooth headset as well. I am not sure how the headset was affected since it was just sitting on my desk near the computer and it was not even plugged in, but ever since the lightning strike all I get is static, strange because I used it yesterday around noon and it worked fine.

I have lived in Florida since the end of 1996 and have never had lightning affect anything inside my house until recently. About 3 weeks ago we had a lightning bolt fry my phone line, now this happened. Talk about bad luck.

  • New podcast ideas and thoughts

I had mentioned last week that I plan to start doing a “new show” again. I have had the itch and been thinking about it for a while. It will still be branded “areyouageek (?) because it’s just me. It will not be the same as before though, it will be a little more me and my current thoughts and opinions. It will still be primarily tech focused as I am a geek and that is what I like, but it will not be a generic tech news show.

I will and do plan to cover and speak about current tech topics but it will not always be the top stories. Just stuff I like and it will also have some other stuff, such as music and my personal stuff mixed in. Pretty much it will be MY SHOW and I hope to find a listening audience. I will not expect everyone to listen and like, and that is OK by me, there are plenty of great podcasts to listen to. I am just looking for a small but good group of friends to listen. More like a small community feel.

I am not looking to create the next great podcast, just have fun and share my geeky life. So if you are interested stay subscribed, a episode will be out in the next week or two. No promise on a date, still have some work to do on putting a “format” together.

  • New iMac on the way…in 3 weeks.

I have never been one to wait for purchase, usually if I want/need something I just tend to buy. However I was patient enough to wait for a new computer. Lately I have been dealing with storage issues on my current Mac mini (that will be hitting eBay in a few weeks). Its a great computer but 160GB of internal storage just is not enough for me. Mine currently has 10GB free, and I have a USB MyBook 500GB drive that I use to backup my Home folder and iTunes folder with storage for home movies (shooting in HD takes a TON of space), and a second USB MyBook 500GB drive that I use for DVD rips, that sadly is also pretty much full.

    new 24″ imac

So I was more than pleased to see the new iMac’s offering 1TB of storage space. Sweet! Now that in addition to 2 500GB MyBook’s I should not have any issue for a long, long time. Now I can sell this Mac mini and finally not have any storage issues. Sadly the mini was a great computer and power and performance wise was more than enough for me.

Of course I went all out with the new iMac in hopes that I will be able to keep and use it for quite some time.

I went ahead and purchased the new 24″ 2.8 Ghz iMac with both iLife ‘08 and also iWork ‘08. I skipped the new wireless keyboard because…well it sucks. Its not a full keyboard. What the hell? Why would I want that? I am a person who actually uses and wants the numeric keypad on the keyboard. So I am not sure if I will switch to the new wired slim keyboard or just use the older (my current) wireless keyboard. Oh well, it cannot be perfect.

  • I have been using both the Apple Bluetooth headset and the Jawbone headset for the past week or so and here are some of my thoughts. Part of my thoughts will go back to the fact that I have been using a (approx.) 4 year old Jabra Bluetooth headset, so I am sure that some of my amazement would be due to the fact that I now have two good headsets. I was planning on continuing using the Jabra but being the Apple Fanboy that I am I thought the iPhone deserved more. So initially I purchased the Apple Bluetooth headset when I bought my iPhone, but when waiting for it to arrive I saw this Jawbone video and decided I had to test it out. So now I have 2 great headsets and each have some really good points…so good in fact that I may continue to use both on a regular basis.
