~~a geeks journey through the internet~~

Well just incase you missed my earlier post, I spoke about the new PayPal Security Key. I ordered it as I was writing that last post.
Well yesterday my Security Key came in the mail, you can seem my Flickr photo set if you want some pics of the package it came in and key itself.
The Key was very quick and easy to activate. Pretty much you enter the Security Key ID #, then enter the first 6 digit code that appears and then enter the next 6 digit code that appears (which takes 30 seconds), after that just submit the info and your key is activated. Very simple took maybe 1 or 2 minutes total time. You can use this key for PayPal and/or eBay.
You do have to activate the key for both sites if you want to use it for both, the directions included provide a URL for both eBay and PayPal activation. Both have the same steps to activate. They also give you a URL just incase you need to get into either site and do not have your key. I have not used this yet but was worried about this. Just incase I happen to be away from home (maybe vacation) and wanted to make a purchase or bid on eBay or simply needed to update my account for any reason. It’s nice to see they thought ahead.
So overall I received this for free, it was easy to activate and makes my information more secure. I would say you should get one for yourself. I am not as excited to have this for eBay but I figured what the heck it’s there I may as well use it. I really wanted it for PayPal. I have, like alot of people alot of personal info in there. I may take all security measures to protect it.
{UPDATE}
Based on the question I had received in the comment I went ahead and added some more information to better show what happens if you are without your security key.
PayPal does give you a URL to visit (www.paypal.com/securitykey or www.ebay.com/securitykey) just incase you need to access your account and you do not have your Security Key with you.
However you can get to the same page just by “attempting” to login as normal. Once your key is activated and you make an attempt to login, after you enter your old username & passcode you will see this screen.
From here you will see the link for “I don’t have my PayPal Security Key” Once that is clicked on it will lead you to,
pretty much giving you the option of you do not have your key or your key is lost. Assuming this is a one-time without your key option you will then see this,
From here it is a page that gives you a few options of what info to enter to gain access. You have to choose one option from either Bank Account, Credit Card or Security Question.
So overall it seems ok to me, if I should be away from home and need some quick access then it seems pretty reasonable that I will be able to get access. Just add a little bit of extra time, but I suppose that is well worth it.
One Response for "PayPal Security Key"
Hey!
I was just thinking the same question as you. What happens if I’m travelling, I don’t have my security key with me and want to log on to my account.
You mentioned that they give you an URL in these cases. How does it work? What kind of information do you have to enter to log on to your account?
